WHAT IT IS

What is a GEO checker?

A GEO checker tests how ready a website is for generative engine optimization, meaning whether AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI features can access, read and cite your content. People increasingly ask these tools for answers instead of scrolling through search results, and a page can only be used if the tool is allowed to fetch it, can read it and can tell who published it.

Many sites fail the first step by accident, through a robots.txt rule or a firewall setting that blocks the crawlers behind AI search. This checker looks at those basics and points out what to fix. It measures readiness signals from outside your site. It does not ask AI tools questions, and it cannot promise a citation.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What the GEO checker tests across five areas

AreaWhat it testsWhy it matters
AI crawler accessrobots.txt rules for OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google and Bing bots, a firewall test with bot user agents, and your sitemapIf a bot cannot fetch your page, it cannot use it.
ExtractabilityHTTPS and status, main content present in the raw HTML, indexability and server response timeMany AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so content built only by scripts may be invisible to them.
Structured data and entityValid JSON-LD, an Organization or Person entity, sameAs profile links, page-type schema and Article fieldsIt helps machines tell who you are and what the page is.
Content citabilityTitle and description, one H1, an answer-first opening, question headings, lists, numbers and outside sourcesClear, well-structured pages are easier to summarize and quote. These checks are heuristics.
Trust and freshnessAuthor or publisher attribution, About, Contact and Privacy links, and last-updated datesClear ownership and recent dates support trust.

AI CRAWLERS

Search bots, user bots and training bots: which ones matter

The checker tests robots.txt rules bot by bot, because blocking a training crawler is very different from blocking an AI search bot.

TypeBots checkedWhat blocking it means
AI search botsOAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBotYour pages can drop out of that assistant search results.
User request botsChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-UserThe assistant cannot open your page when a person asks about it.
Classic search botsGooglebot, bingbotGoogle and Bing cannot crawl the page, which also affects AI features built on them.
Training botsGPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, CCBot, Bytespider, meta-externalagentA policy choice about model training. It is shown but not scored.

Bot names and behavior change often, so check important findings against each vendor documentation.

HOW TO USE IT

How to run a GEO check

  1. Choose single page or whole site. Single page checks one URL plus site-level access. Whole site reads the pages in your sitemap, up to 1,500.
  2. Enter your address and run the check. A single page takes seconds. A large site can take several minutes, and you can stop and view partial results.
  3. Start with AI crawler access. Any blocked search or user bot is the highest priority, followed by extractability problems.
  4. Copy the report and fix. Use the Copy report button to share findings, then re-run the check after your changes.

SCORE

How the GEO readiness score works

The score is built from the five areas above. Each check earns full, half or no points, and the total is scaled to 100. Access checks carry the most weight, because a blocked page cannot be cited at all. The bands are Strong at 85 or more, Decent at 65 or more, Weak at 40 or more and Poor below that.

The weights are my own judgment and the content checks are rules of thumb, not confirmed ranking factors. The llms.txt file is reported for information only, because no major AI provider has confirmed using it to choose citations.

CHECKLIST

GEO checklist: how to improve AI search readiness

  • Allow AI search and user bots in robots.txt, and decide separately about training bots.
  • Check that your firewall or CDN does not block AI crawlers.
  • Serve the main content in the raw HTML, not only through JavaScript.
  • Publish an XML sitemap with accurate lastmod dates.
  • Add Organization or Person schema with a name, URL and sameAs profile links.
  • Open pages with a short, direct answer, then expand.
  • Use question-style headings, lists and tables where they fit.
  • Link to reliable outside sources and include specific numbers where they are true.
  • Show an author, About, Contact and Privacy pages, and a last-updated date.
  • Validate your structured data in the Schema Markup Validator.

FAQ

GEO checker FAQ

What is a GEO checker?

A GEO checker tests how ready a website is for generative engine optimization, meaning whether AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI features can access, read and cite your content.

What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of making your site easy for AI answer engines to access, read and cite.

Does a high score mean AI tools will cite my site?

No. The score measures readiness signals that can be checked from outside, such as crawler access, readable HTML, structured data and clear content. Citation decisions are made inside each AI system and nobody outside those companies can guarantee them.

Should I block AI training bots?

That is your call. Training bots such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot are separate from the bots that fetch pages for AI search and user questions. Blocking training bots is a policy choice and this tool does not score it as a problem. Blocking the search and user bots can remove you from AI answers.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

Probably not for visibility. Public log studies suggest AI bots rarely request it, and none of the major AI providers has publicly confirmed using it to choose citations. This tool reports whether you have one for information only and gives it no points.

Why does the firewall test only give a warning?

We send requests that carry bot names in the user agent, but real AI bots come from published IP ranges that firewalls often treat differently. A refusal is a sign to review your firewall settings, not proof that real bots are blocked.

How is the GEO score calculated?

The score is built from five areas: AI crawler access, extractability, structured data and entity signals, content citability and trust and freshness. Each check earns full, half or no points, and the total is scaled to 100. The weights are my own judgment, and the content checks are heuristics.

What is the difference between a GEO checker and an AI visibility tracker?

A GEO checker tests the technical and content signals on your site. An AI visibility tracker asks AI tools questions and records whether your brand is mentioned. This tool does the first only and does not query AI engines.

Can it check my whole website?

Yes. Whole site mode reads the pages in your sitemap, up to 1,500 pages, and combines the results into one score with a list of the weakest pages.

Is this GEO checker free?

Yes. It is free and needs no signup. Our server fetches the public pages you enter to run the checks, and checks are rate limited to keep the service fair for everyone.
